Trail Clearing on the SHT — Temperance River State Park, MN

Trip FullCategory: Trail Maintenance

Fri - SunMay 14 - May 162021
  • Estimated Cost: $75
  • Max Trip Size: 6 people
Description:

I have signed up to clear a section of the Superior Hiking Trail (approximately from Schroeder to Temperance Road). This section is about 4.3 miles long. See Google map https://www.google.com/maps/@47.5562561,-90.8968311,15z?hl=en

Across the Cross River from Schroeder on 61 there is a loop road to the north Skou Rd. , we would start there and follow the river north on a spur trail until joining the SHT where it crosses the river, we would then work east (right) to Temperance Road.

We would be clearing the trail of brush and windfall using nippers, hand saws and a chain saw (I am certified to use the chain saw). I need to have at least one other person on the trip be certified in First Aid and CPR.

I am hoping to get the chainsaw work done on Friday afternoon so we can listen to natural sounds the rest of the weekend. I have hiked the section and it will be mainly nipper work with some moving of existing brush piles further back into the woods. Friday is an optional day so if you need to drive up after work that would be fine. The cost of the trip will be the camping fees and any extras like fire wood. Transportation will be on your own. About half the distance will be along the Cross River with some nice views for breaks.

Lodging: We will be staying at Lamb’s Resort in Schroeder as it would cut the travel time to almost nothing and would provide showers. We will be camping in their tent sites, two tents per site, one person per tent except for those from a household. I will be reserving the campsites.

Food: We will be each providing our own meals.

Please let me know if you are interested.
