Please join me as we canoe 52 miles on the Green River through Stillwater Canyon in the heart of Canyonlands National Park. The Green River cuts through 1500 feet of colorful sandstone as it meanders its way towards the Grand Canyon. Expect easy flatwater paddling, side hikes through magnificent rock formations, and camping on sandbars. When we reach the confluence of the Green and Colorado Rivers our outfitter will pick us up in boats and bring us back up the Colorado River to Moab, UT.
Itinerary:
4/3: Travel to Moab, Utah and stay in hostel or hotel.
4/4: Outfitter launches us at Mineral Bottom
4/5-4/8: Canoeing, day hikes, and wilderness camping
4/9: Outfitter picks us up in boats at the confluence of the Green and Colorado River. 4-6 hour powerboat ride up the Colorado River. Lodging in hostel or hotel.
4/10: Trip finishes in morning and travel home.
Transportation: Individuals must provide their own transportation to and from Moab, Utah. The closest airports are Grand Junction, CO and Salt Lake City, UT.
Outfitter: We plan to rent canoes, paddles, PFDs, drybags, water jugs, and a toilet from Tex’s Riverways in Moab, Utah. They will also provide transportation from Moab to Mineral Bottom, power boat service and van transportation back to Moab.
Experience level: Participants must have wilderness camping experience (i.e. backpacking or BWCA), knowledge of leave no trace, basic canoeing experience, and ability to swim.
Costs:
Payable to Trip Coordinator (Estimated)
- Paddling Gear Rental, Portable Toilet Rental, and Transportation provided by the Outfitter – $500 per person
- Lodging (TBD) the night before and after in Moab, Utah. – $250 per person
- Additional misc. expenses (parking, group gear, maps, etc) – $50 per person
- Lodging and outfitter fees (less deposit) due to trip coordinator on 3/10/23.
Responsibility of individual:
- Transportation to and from Moab, Utah. Closest airports are Grand Junction, CO or Salt Lake City, UT. (Air fare MSP to SLC was about $500, and there is always the option to drive.)
- We will work to arrange sharing of rental cars to and from airport(s). (Car rental is about $500 which can be split between multiple people.)
- Food while in the backcountry (Est $200)
- Meals before and after the trip. (Est $100)
Other notes:
- This trip will include backcountry camping with no facilities available. We will pack out solid human waste in a fully sealed portable toilet.
- We will follow desert leave no trace ethics.
- Average temperatures will be in the 60s to 70s in the daytime to lows in the 40s in the evening.
- Camping is on sandbars. Fine desert sand will get in EVERYTHING from camp stoves to cameras. If you can’t tolerate sand, don’t go on this trip.
- There will be a MANDATORY pre-trip meeting in early March via zoom.
- Everyone must participate in trip planning. I’ll be asking for volunteers to handle navigation, planning side hikes, researching area history, leave no trace ethics, and possibly stargazing.
- Covid vaccines and boosters are required for the trip.

One final note: Four spots on this trip are guaranteed, because I am paying the outfitter a non-refundable deposit to for transportation. I’ll add spots two at a time until 8 people have signed up. The absolute last day for me to add people is 2/1/23.
