Category: Snowshoeing / Hiking, Winter Camping, Fat Biking

Fri - SunMar 3 - Mar 52023
  • Estimated Cost: $25
  • Deposit: $10
  • Max Trip Size: 6 people
Description:

Join us for a two-night weekend winter camping trip to the Split Rock Lighthouse State Park, 200 miles north of MSP. It is about a three hour drive from Minneapolis.

We will hike, snowshoe, and possibly fat bike.  I have reserved a cart-in campsite on the cliff overlooking Lake Superior which is only a 0.6 mile hike. Up to six people can camp at this site.  More sites are available and can be reserved depending on interest.

Snowshoeing/Hiking – There are 8.2 Miles for snowshoeing and mountain biking at Split Rock. These trails take you along the shore of Lake Superior. Snowshoes are available through the Rovers equipment locker for members, as well as snowshoe rental at the park for $6. The Superior Hiking Trail is also nearby and is an excellent day hike opportunity.

Dress warm and plan for temps from the teens to as low as zero.  The Rovers have camping equipment and winter camping bags that can be checked out from the equipment locker. Contact the equipment director or assistant [email protected] to check out any Rovers equipment, including pulks for this Rover trip.  Here is the recent Rovers presentation on winter tips to stay warm https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wisNrpk1K2Q

The cost will cover our campsite and firewood, estimated at $10-$25/per person for both nights. All vehicles entering the park need an MN State Park sticker which can be purchased at the park.  An annual sticker costs $35. The cost for gas will be shared amongst the carpoolers.

RSVP by Sunday, 28 January by emailing Pat at [email protected] including your name, experience winter camping, cellphone, and email if you can drive or need to carpool, and your location for carpooling.
