Description:

This trip will fill – sign up soon! DEADLINE – MUST sign up and pay deposit by December 1.

Drive up Friday afternoon or evening (approx. 6 hour drive – it’s okay to arrive as late as midnight – we will arrange for someone to meet you to hike 1/2 mile across West Bearskin lake to the camp – beautiful area up the Gunflint Trail, north of Grand Marais. There are many sights close to Menogyn including Rose Falls and Stairway portage, Honeymoon Bluff, Caribou Rock, Watap Palisades and others that make excellent day trips. Activities: 1) Dog-Sledding (try your hand at mushing or just ride, sign up for a 45 minute time-slot, and/or hang out with the dogs all you want), 2) Snowshoeing (the camp staff know all the best snowshoe hikes), 3) Cross Country Skiing (on the lakes, into the BWCAW, or hike back to car for short drive to top-notch groomed trails at Bearskin Lodge), 4) Sledding (nice hill right outside the YMCA lodge), 5) Relaxing (YMCA lodge is a great place to read, relax, drink hot cocoa, play games – including pingpong) 6) Sauna & lake dip. Lodging: large 8-person bunk houses with semi-privacy between bunks Toilets: outhouses (surprisingly not too bad to use in the winter) – also 2 indoor restrooms in the lodge (for the entire camp of 40 people, so using the outhouse is encouraged) Showers: Finnish “showers” = a hot wood fired sauna, topped off with a dip in the lake – seriously – I bet you’ll love it! Alcohol not allowed (YMCA rules) but you will be having so much fun you won’t miss it! NO CHORES! The camp staff does all the work! The weekend will end after breakfast on Monday February 28. (Note: you can leave Sunday afternoon/evening if you wish, but cost remains the same). Slideshow program– November 9 meeting. Estimated cost: $165 + transportation. Deposit: $80 non-refundable deposit. Max trip size: 24-32.
