Join me for an informational hike at Nerstrand Big Woods State Park to learn how to identify trees in the park in the wintertime.
Where: Meet at main parking lot just past Visitor Center.
When: 10 a.m. to 12:30. We will hike 3-4 miles total, but will pause often to learn about the trees.
12:30-1:30. Following the hike(optional), join us at a nearby restaurant for coffee/brunch/lunch. Possibly the Fireside Lounge and Supperclub in Dennison, MN
Other info: The Park is well-known for spring ephemeral wildflowers, Hidden Falls, and the fall colors. What amazes me the most, however, are the trees and the birds. Many of the trees are over 150 years old and are huge! A vehicle permit is required for all motor vehicles entering the park. It is $7 for a day or $35 for a 12-month permit.
Please email me so I know who and how many to expect. Non-Rover members please fill out the waiver form below. Foot traction devices may be helpful. Bring any water or snacks you might want. Dress warm!
Below is a list of the trees we identified in 2022, the last time I led this hike:
We saw Northern Pin, Northern Red, White, and Bur Oaks, Paper Birch, Sugar Maple, Hackberry, Bitternut Hickory, Ironwood, American Basswood, Eastern Cottonwood, Bigtooth and Quaking Aspen, Black Walnut, Black, Green, and White Ash, Black Cherry, Boxelder, American Elm
