From the DNR event description:
“Grab your family, pack your hat and mittens, and throw on your long-johns for a fun family-friendly New Year’s celebration in the park. Hike miles of candle-lit trails, warm up at one of several roaring bonfires, toast marshmallows and more! This annual event draws nearly 2000 hearty people each year despite frigid temperatures and wind chills. Please join us for a fun and unique way to celebrate 2016 and ring in 2017!”
About 30 Rovers and friends joined the candlelight walk last year. It was amazingly tranquil and serene. Friends chatting quietly as they walked through the snowy, candle-lit woods added a sense of warmth and community. Come experience it for yourself.
New meeting instructions:
Arrive early. There will be many people trying to park.
Park in the Beach lots or on Picnic Island as directed by the event staff. Meet at the Beach House between 6:00 and 6:30 p.m. Look for the Rover sign. We will head out on the trail in small groups every 10 or 15 minutes as people arrive. I will join the last group on the trail around 6:30. Plan to walk about 60-90 minutes.
$5 park entry fee (or annual vehicle sticker).
Note: There will be a long line for stickers. It is helpful to already have a park sticker or carpool with someone who does.
Non-members are welcome on this hike, and I’m sure by the end of the evening you’ll want to make getting outside more with the Minnesota Rovers your New Year’s resolution!
