Are you an experienced backpacker looking to fit in an early Fall weekend on the Superior Hiking Trail? If so, then this 3-day, 2-night trip may be for you!
The trip will begin at Crosby-Manitou State Park and end at the Highway 1 trailhead just north of Tettegouche State Park – about 26 miles. Highlights include spectacular views from the Section 13 Cliffs and elsewhere, some steep scrambling, moose habitat, a long boardwalk and a variety of forest landscapes.
Don’t have all the gear? We can probably get what you need from the gear locker!
This trip is open to 5 Rovers who have been on 1 or more overnight backpacking trips of similarly rugged trail. The SHT is rugged and more difficult than most state park trails in Minnesota. You should be able to handle 10-12 miles with a full pack (30+ lbs., unless ultralight) on state park trails that come close to replicating the SHT – think Afton, Banning, Jay Cooke. Participation in a get-acquainted day hike with your backpack and all the gear you plan to bring is a condition of going on this trip (possible exception is if I know your capability from previous rover trips, etc.)
This trip is not for beginners.
The weekend will include driving up to the north shore in the early morning and hiking in the afternoon on Friday; a full day of hiking Saturday; and an early-morning hike out and drive home in the afternoon Sunday. Early wake-ups will improve our chances of getting into the better campsites on what may be a busy weekend on the trail.
A deposit of $10 payable to the coordinator and completion of a short questionnaire will hold your space. Estimated cost of $35 includes mileage and fuel for the drive up and back, assuming 3 people per vehicle; add to that your food and supplies.
You must be a member to sign up, and your membership must be current at the time of the trip.
