If you like big trees, waterfalls and hot springs; this is a fabulous place to visit. In 2010, National Geographic Traveler magazine rated the Columbia Gorge the world’s sixth-best sustainable tourism destination.
We fly into Portland Oregon on Sunday arriving by later afternoon (tickets on your own). We’ll hike Monday through Friday with a shorter hike Friday when we fly back later afternoon. There are plenty of hiking trails in the Gorge and around Mt. Hood. Sunday, Monday, Tuesday nights we stay at Mazama Lodge (mountaineering club) with bunk beds on Mt Hood. Then Thursday and Friday we stay at McMenamins Edgefield Inn (bunk beds) on the eastern side of Portland. Both are inexpensive lodges with a lot of character. We will also visit the famous Timberline Lodge a bit higher up Mt. Hood for some beer on the terrace or dinner. One of the days we will hike to Bagby Hot Springs, a natural hot springs in an old-growth forest. We will travel in a mini-van.
There is food at both lodges available for sit-down eating, but this is not included in the lodging; on your own. Lunch will probably be eaten on the trail so bring what you might want to eat or we will make a stop at a grocery store in Portland. At Mazama Lodge they can also prepare the lunch to take along. Dinner $12.60 Breakfast and Lunch are both $8.40 at the Mazama Lodge. You can see the food options at McMenamins on the web link below
