Edmund Fitzgerald memorial beacon lighting – Photography
Every year on the 10th of November, the beacon at Split Rock is lighted to commemorate the sinking of the freighter SS Edmund Fitzgerald, and all the other vessels lost on the Great Lakes. At 4:30 pm, the lighthouse closes temporarily while the Naval Hymn is played and the names of the 29 lost crew members are read to the tolling of a ship’s bell. At the end of the ceremony, the beacon is lighted and visitors are welcome to tour the lantern room. This is the only time during the year that visitors are able to see the interior of the light tower while the beacon is lit.
This is an opportunity for early-season winter camping during the lighting of Split Rock Lighthouse in memory of the Edmund Fitzgerald. I have reserved a campsite at rock lighthouse State Park for two nights starting on November 9. These are cart-in campsites On the Shore of Lake Superior. There will be ample opportunities for hiking, biking (?), and photography. Or any other activities you would like to participate. Transportation and meals are on your own. But I will help coordinate carpooling.
On Saturday, November 10 prior to the lighting ceremony I’d like to have a potluck supper. So bring something to share, stoves and cookware provided. You will need to provide your own tent and cold weather sleeping bag.
