    The Afton Breakfast Hikes are turning into seasonal outings each spring, summer, and fall, so this is the spring 2015 edition. This time, we are going to increase our distance and difficulty. I mapped a route of 9.5-10 miles that explores the trails on the steep bluffs in the north end of the park.

    Monday Night Bike Ride — St. Paul, MN

    Summer Trips Bicycling

    Meet at 6:30 p.m. at the Como Lakeside Pavilion to bike a 17-mile loop on trails through Reservoir Woods, around Lake Phalen and down Swede Hollow to downtown St Paul. About one-third of this route is on city streets. Capri Big Band plays at Como Dockside as we return. Call me if you’re running late.

    All day Intro To Sea Kayaking class offered through SKOAC - a local Sea Kayak club. This is an all day class appropriate for sea kayakers with little or no experience as well as paddlers looking to refine their skills.

    Boat Entry and Wet Exits
    Rescues Solo and Assisted
    Strokes, including forward, reverse, stop, sweeps (forward and reverse), draws.

During the day go hiking in the park, biking along the historic Sparta/Elroy bike trail, horseback riding, birding from the viewpoint and paddling along the nearby Kickapoo River.

    Rock Climbing Self-Rescue Clinic — Taylor's Falls, MN

    This trip is for climbers who want to practice or learn self-rescue techniques, especially for multi-pitch climbing. Techniques will be demonstrated and then you will have an opportunity to practice them. Event will take place at Interstate State Park on the Minnesota side. You are welcome to come one or both days.     Three Rivers Park employees will coordinate with Rovers to remove Buckthorn at Elm Creek Park reserve from 2pm to 6pm. We will pull Buckthorn at the start of the expert mountain bike trail.     Meet at the Tamarack Nature Center by 7pm for the 1.5 - 2 hour moderately paced hike on mostly unpaved trails. The Nature Center is found at: 5287 Otter Lake Road, White Bear Township, MN 55110. Socializing afterwards at the Dairy Queen in White Bear Lake for those who are interested. We hike rain or shine, so bring your rain gear if showers are in the forecast.

    Midweek Hike & Music! (Lake Harriet Bandshell) — Minneapolis, Minnesota

    What better way to spend a summer evening than a delightful hike around a city lake followed by music! We’ll meet at the Lake Harriet Bandshell at 6:30 for a jaunt around Lake Harriet with a goal of being back by 7:30 to enjoy The Belfast Cowboys (a Van Morrison tribute band). There’s a warm-up band at 7:00 as well, so feel free to show up just for the music and camaraderie if you’d like. Other options include riding your bike and/or bringing a picnic dinner. RSVP’s appreciated so I know who to expect, but not required.

    We’ll spend the weekend exploring the trails and lakes in and around this park near Battle Lake, about three hours northwest of the Twin Cities.The two new yurts (one sleeps 3 and the other 7) have their own spot on Annie Battle Lake and can be reached only by bike or boat,,,,We’ll paddle in the 5-lake chain,,,,,and bike the 12-mile Glendalough Trail to Battle Lake.

    Bicycle Tour the International Selkirk Loop — Sandpoint, Idaho

    A 400 mile and 10 day bicycle tour of the International Selkirk Loop located in the Rocky Mountains http://selkirkloop.org. The ride starts in Sandpoint ID and loops through British Columbia, Washington State then back to Sandpoint ID. This will be a full self supported trip so we will be camping every night and cooking most meals.
