    Thursday Night Bike Ride — Mears Park, MN

    Meet 6:30 pm in Mears Park (at the downstream corner near 5th & Wacouta) to bike a 12-mile loop up Swede Hollow, around Lake Phalen and back through the new Trout Creek Nature Center. Music from 6-9 by Gramofone, then Pistol Whippin Party Penguins. Parking meters not enforced after 5 pm. Call me if you’re running late.

    Come do some 14er mountains with two long-distance Rovers!

    We plan to do a few peaks over the long weekend. Which ones will depend on interests of those who come, so now’s the time to bag those peaks that you’ve been itching to do! The routes/peaks can be either hiking, technical rock climbing, or easy snow climbing, based on your experience and desires.

    Mid-Week Hike — Hyland Lake Park Reserve, Bloomington, MN

    Summer Trips Hiking Social and Special Events Social Events

    Meet at the Visitor Center at Hyland Lake Park Reserve. The hike starts promptly at 7:00 p.m., so plan to be there by 6:50. We will hike for approximately 90 minutes. Additional socializing afterward at the Dairy Queen at 7700 Normandale Boulevard. All are welcome as you do not need to be a member for day activities. Bring water, snack, bug spray, and rain gear. We hike regardless of the weather. Address and directions to the Visitor Center available from the park website.

    Camping, hiking, paddling and chasing dragonflies at Glacial Lakes State Park. This is a family friendly trip. Members of the Minnesota Dragonfly Society have invited Rovers to participate in developing a list of dragonflies and damselflies for the Park and add to the current list for Pope County. Society members will provide nets and related materials for the dragonfly survey.

    Canoeing West Bearskin Lake to Gunflint — Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, Minnesota

    This trip begins on Thursday, 16 July, by carpooling to Cascade River State Park to camp overnight. On Friday, we will drive to West Bearskin Lake and launch before canoeing through it, Duncan, Rose, Rat, South,
    and North Lakes to Gunflint Lake before beginning our return, with a complimentary west wind at our backs.We will camp our last evening in the BWCA on Sunday and exit on Monday (20 July) for the return home. There will be a total of 6 easy to moderate portages each way. Sharing tents will be promoted.

    Join us for three days on the nationally renowned Border Route Trail! “It’s fun, it’s great exercise, it makes you feel good, and the scenics and camaraderie are unbeatable.”Over the weekend you’ll get to hike the entire 12+ miles of the Pigeon River section of BRT including the final mile that we share with the Superior Hiking Trail. We also plan to do a dead fall and brushing sweep along the Bluffs overlooking the Royal River and South Fowl Lake then continue down to the banks of the Pigeon River where we’ll do a bit of clearing on the Pigeon River campsite.

    Beginners' Rock Climbing — Interstate Park, Taylors Falls, MN

    Park in lot just before bridge to Wisconsin on Hwy 8. Wear clothes that allow full mobility and that may get scuffed up. (Rovers will provide all climbing gear.) Bring water and snack if you’d like We go out after climbing for a beer/meal (optional). Those wanting to learn/practice setting climbs should be there at 3:30-4pm. Otherwise, we climb from 4-9pm. Fill out climbing permits (free) at the parking lot kiosk (once a year).

    Join us exploring Zippel Bay State Park, which is the Northernmost State Park in Minnesota and borders Lake of the Woods. We’ll be leaving after work on Friday and staying at Savanna Portage State Park that night and Zippel Bay State Park on Saturday and Sunday night. While we are at Zippel Bay SP, we plan on hiking, exploring, and paddling.

    Quetico Canoe Trip — Atikokan, Ontario , Canada

    Summer Trips Paddling

    Using an outfitter for two canoes and a tow, we’ll travel through Nym Lake, Pickeral Narrows, south to Sturgeon, exploring the interior area with a number of waterfalls, exiting via Stanton Bay. There will be layover days in the waterfall area. Three portages in and three out are planned, plus portages on day trips.

    One of the top five firework shows in the country, the Target Fireworks will light up the Minneapolis sky at 10 pm with a spectacular pyrotechnic display in celebration of the 75th Aquatennial,,,,,,,we’ll set up a group blanket. Enjoy music, food, and people watching until the fireworks start.

    Meet at the Visitor’s Center at French Regional Park in Plymouth at 6:45 p.m. The park is on the north end of Medicine Lake. We’ll hike for approximately 1 1/2 hours at a moderate pace. Bring water and rain gear, if needed. Sorry, no dogs. We’ll socialize after the hike, if anyone is interested.

    Brew, Canoe and Cheese Chew in western Wisconsin — Eau Claire, WI

    Summer Trips Paddling

    Canoe/kayak trip on rivers around Eau Claire in western Wisconsin. We will meet in Eau Claire Friday evening at 6 pm at the Northwoods Brew Pub. This dinner is not covered in the trip cost. Saturday morning we put-in on the Eau Claire River for a 10 mile wind on a scenic stretch with sand bars and clear water. Sunday morning we caravan/shuttle to the Chippewa River for a 12 mile stretch below Eau Claire to Caryville. After paddling we drive 30 minutes to the Eau Galle Cheese Factory, towards the Twin Cities, to chew some cheese curds and sample some of the best cheeses in Wisc.
