    Cross-Country Skiing at ABR over New Year's Weekend — Ironwood, MI

    The U.P. gets much more snow—and sooner than we do, so we are virtually guaranteed great ski conditions. Both ABR and Wolverine, near Ironwood, MI, have a nice mix of trails for everyone including: skate, classic, and snowshoeing. We’ll be staying 3 nights (heading up Friday morning, returning Monday evening) in a house near Ironwood, Michigan — which is ~15 minutes from the XC ski trails.

    Weekend Canoe Trip on St Croix River

    Easy weekend canoe trip on the St Croix river covering 16 miles total. Put in at landing just above O’Brian State Park and take out at Boom Site landing or futher down in Stillwater. We will camp on the Wisconsin side of the river and should have time to relax at the campsite.

    Praire Seed Collection — Murphy Hanrehan Park Reserve, MN

    Join me in helping Three Rivers Park District collect prairie seeds at Murphy Hanrehan Park. It’s easy to do and our help is greatly appreciated. From the road, a prairie looks like a field of weeds, but when you are “IN” the prairie you will discover many different flowers and plants. From the Three Rivers Park District web site: Help restore the prairie by collecting native wildflower seed. Volunteers increase the amount and diversity of seed planted annually in over 1,200 acres of restored prairie managed by Three Rivers. Learn about the prairie’s rich history and how to identify many of the plants. Youth must be accompanied by an adult.

    Buckthorn Removal at Murphy-Hanrehan Park — Murphy-Hanrehan Park Reserve/Scott County/Burnsville area, Minnesota

    There is a woodlot at Murphy-Hanrehan Park Reserve, southwest of Buck Hill, that needs your help. This 8 plus-acre section of woods, with some old growth trees, has been the subject of buckthorn removal for the last three years by Three Rivers Park District. Before the trip date, a Three Rivers work crew will cut down larger buckthorn trees. The limbs will need stacking, and thick growths of seedlings and small saplings need hand pulling.

    Trail Clearing on the Border Route Trl: Stump R. to the Superior Hiking Trl — Otter Lake, Hovland, MN

    We welcome you to become a part of Rover history by joining our Rover/BRTA crews in clearing portions of the Border Route Trail. A nationally recognized trail which was laid out and built by Rover crews between 1972 and 1980. This trail maintenance trip will clear the remaining brush and deadfall has made hiking difficult over portions of the eastern end of the BRT since last December’s ice storm.

    I am planning a trip to Bayfield the weekend of July 22-24. This is the house that the Rovers use in the winter. I am planning to bike on Madeline Island which is is a pretty easy ride, several parks for a lunch stop and suitable for beginners. However you are free to do what you like biking, hiking, kayaking or just a stroll around the town.

    Buckthorn Pull at Elm Creek Park Reserve MN Rovers Woodlot — Champlin, MN

    MN has 2% of original forest remnant and MN Rovers has adopted a remnant oak forest. Help pull buckthorn or use the weed puller to free the natives to take over! Those working at least 3 hours will get a MN Rover cap while supplies last. Come see the progress we’ve made so far and give our forests a fighting chance. Meet at 10200 Gooselake Parkway, Champlin. This is Highpoint Park. We will walk the short paved bike trail into the woodlot.

    We had *so much fun* on the Easter Cuyuna yurt trip that we decided to go back when we can actually ride on the mountain bike trails and bring our kayaks. This time, though, we’ll be staying at a group site at Father Hennepin State Park. Options will include hiking, cycling around Mille Lacs, exploring the Croft Mine, or playing at Cuyuna Recreation Area.

    Winnipeg Folk Festival — Birds Hill Provincial Park, Canada

    This used to be an annual Rovers trip in the ‘70s and ‘80s and I have wanted to go ever since I heard about it! There will be 4 days of folk music on 10 stages in a beautiful provincial park just outside of Winnipeg with hiking and a beach.The 4-day ticket includes the admission and camping. The performers will announced on March 10 and Early Bird tickets go on sale March 11.

We will be entering via Little Gabbro, #33, with just one 200-rod portage from car to base camp on either Little Gabbro Lake or Gabbro Lake. This is a very pretty area with lots to explore. From base camp, there will be 3 lakes to explore, as well as the Kawishiwi river.

    2016 Rovers Astronomy Weekend — Wildcat Mountain State Park, Ontario, WI

    During the day go hiking in the park, biking along the historic Sparta/Elroy bike trail, birding from the viewpoint and paddling along the nearby Kickapoo River. We will plan a group paddle on Sat. June 4th. There may also be rock climbing at Devil’s Lake state park (an hour away). At night, join members of the Minnesota Astronomical Society to observe the stars and planets with large telescopes from two group campsites atop Wildcat Mountain. This year’s focuses will be Mars and Saturn, as well as various deep-sky objects and comets. When clear, we will be limiting camp fires to maximize sky transparency.

    Spring Extravaganza — Wild River State Park, MN

    Registration for the Extravaganza has begun! The event runs from Friday late afternoon until Sunday afternoon and will be held at Wild River State Park on the St. Croix River near North Branch. The Extravaganza is an opportunity for non-members or newer members to learn more about the club, along with seasoned MN Rover members! There will be organized activities for all levels of participation, from beginner to experienced. This event happens in the spring and fall and is the only overnight trip that you do not need to be a Rovers member to attend. Cost is anywhere from Free to $20 based on what you can do that weekend.     Art Shanty Projects - Cancelled (Ice conditions) — White Bear Lake, Minnesota

    This event has been cancelled due to ice conditions. Stay tuned for an alternate hike posted.  There will be a hike at Tamarack Nature center - meet in the parking lot at 11am. Join us in exploring the Art Shanty Projects on Saturday February 20th at 11:00 on White Bear Lake. This is a festival on ice with shanty themes that vary from educational, interactive to just plain fun, like the Dance Shanty or the Slumber Party Shanty. The event is free and family friendly. If you miss this, the program runs every weekend in February from 10 am to 4 pm.

    Winter Camping in the BWCA — Ely, Mn

    Three days of winter camping in the Ely area of the BWCA. Leave the cities on Sat Jan 13 in the morning and return Monday Jan 15th. We will ski/snowshoe about a mile and set up a camp and day trip out of it. One of the lakes will visit has a very nice Indian rock art site. Jointly run with the Sierra Club.

    Join Three River Park District’s battle against the invasive vine Oriental Bittersweet by participating in an “Invasive Blitz” at Elm Creek Park Reserve on Saturday, February 6! We will be hiking off-trail on uneven terrain in areas usually off-limits to the public. We’ll be looking for the brightly-colored red berries of the vine.

    Explore Frontenac State Park in winter. Highlights include stunning views from the bluffs above Lake Pepin and hiking through prairie and upland hardwood forest. After hiking, we’ll head to Kelly’s Taphouse Bar & Grill in Red Wing for lunch. Over lunch we’ll decide if we would like to hike up Barn Bluff before leaving Red Wing. Minnesota Rovers will once again assist REI and Fort Snelling staff with free activities that showcase how much fun winter can be! We will be helping visitors with snowshoes.
