Trip Description

Join us for a fun BWCA trip! We enter at Lake One, paddle through the numbered lakes, past the Pigami Creek Fire and hope to land a great base camp site at Insula Lake. We will base camp on Insula Thursday through Sunday and do lots of fishing, exploring, relaxing, reading, swimming and laughing!

Itinerary: Wed Aug 30, drive to Ely, stay at bunkhouse, pack portage packs that night. Thurs Aug 31, early AM wake up, a quick breakfast and enter BWCA. Paddle and portage to Insula. Setup base camp on Insula and stay until Sunday. Early rise on Sunday to paddle out. Drive home Sunday night. Labor Day Monday to relax at home. (Itinerary could change based on weather.)

The Adventure: We have 7 portages, none of them super long, and a few lakes. This means: We will pack light, you must be able to paddle and portage, we will be sharing tents, we will supply all group gear and food (we can discuss possible gear options you might bring). Insula has great fishing, so there will be lots of fishing. We will pack light, go far, work hard, and have lots of fun! (Route could change based on weather.)

Food and Beverages: Meals are planned by us and will accommodate gluten free, dairy free and vegetarian (there will be meat in meals, somehow separated for vegetarians). We supply all snacks and lunches too. Most all food will be dehydrated. There will be adult beverages on this trip.

Trip cost is still TBD. It can be anywhere from $130 to $230. It will depend on how many and what kind of boats we need to rent.

Trip Description

Eclipse time! On Monday, August 21 a total solar eclipse will be visible across the USA with the path of total eclipse passing as close as Nebraska. I have a reservation for Sunday night at Branched Oak State Recreation Area in Nebraska just outside the path of totality.

The drive down to Nebraska on Sunday will be about 7 hours. We’ll camp and drive to the path of totality on Monday morning. The eclipse will be around mid-day. Be prepared to change plans depending on cloud cover. In order to remain flexible, I did not make a reservation for Monday night. We’ll start driving home after the eclipse and find a place to camp on the way home. Return home on Tuesday, time to be determined. Be prepared to be away from home through dinner time on Tuesday.

Estimated cost is $70-$100, which includes gas & mileage ($50-$60 based on 3-4 people per vehicle) and campsites. I am working on finding eclipse viewing glasses/filters. Food will be on your own or can be planned as a group. Food is not included in the estimated price.

This trip is weather dependent. Deposit is $50. $45 will be refunded in case of weather cancellation. (Campsite reservation already paid.) One site currently reserved. Will reserve up to 2 additional campsites if more people sign up, based on availability. Campsites in the area are going fast, so don’t delay.

Trip Description

I am planning a trip to Bayfield for the weekend of July 21-23. I will rent the house that Rovers use in the winter and have room for 6-10 people depending on the mix of singles/couples. There are 3 bedrooms-2 with twin beds and one with a queen bed. I also have the 2 motel rooms right above the main level. The place is right along the highway so you do hear some road noise at night.

I am hoping to do some biking on Madeline Island but people are free to do whatever activities they enjoy-hiking, kayaking, shopping, wine tasting. Bayfield has a lot going on in the summertime.

The cost of the trip will probably less than 100.00. People will be on their own for lunch and we’ll probably do a potluck for dinner. I will bring a variety of foods for breakfast. The place has a full kitchen.

If you are interested please contact me either by e-mail mapiehowski@yahoo.com or phone 715-866-4870.

Trip Description

Join me next Tuesday morning for a guided 4 - 5 mile bike ride along the Mississippi River Trail with a National Park Ranger. This is a co-hosted event between the City of Hastings & the Mississippi River National Recreation Area. (AKA: MISS)

This section of the Mississippi River Trail is part of the Mississippi National River & Recreation Area—a National Park that stretches for 72 miles along the Mississippi river throughout the Twin Cities Metro Area.

Let’s meet & be ready to ride at 9:45 AM at the Rotary Pavilion in Levee Park in downtown Hastings. I will have a bright pink bike helmet w/ a brown MN Rovers bandana attached so you can spot me before the ride.

Here is the description from the Facebook event:
A Park Ranger will lead the 4 mile bike ride along the Mississippi River Trail for a morning of scenic biking along the riverfront; while learning fun facts about the Mississippi river!
https://www.facebook.com/events/271422706655260/?active_tab=about

The guided ride lasts one hour. After that, we can determine as a group if we want to bike further along the Mississippi River Trail.

This is a family-friendly, beginner friendly day trip and MN Rovers membership is not required. Please let me know if you will join me, so I can look for you.

Bring water, helmet & snacks. Eating at a local restaurant after our ride is an option.

Trip Description

Join your Rover friends for backpacking in the canyons of southern Utah. We have permits for 3 nights in Buckskin Gulch and Paria Canyon.
Buckskin Gulch is one of the longest slot canyons in the world at 12 miles with only one way out at 6 miles. The first day in the canyon will be a 14 mile challenging and beautiful hike including short climbs down (not technical) and wading in muddy pools that range from calf to chest deep. Plan to carry 2 gallons of water on the first day as the first water source is 15 miles from the trailhead. Once down to the Paria River, the pace will be more measured as there will be access to drinking water and safe places to camp.
Important Notes:
1. This is not a beginner hike. Only experienced backpackers who can hike 15 miles a day with a heavy pack will be accepted.
2. The ability to hike Buckskin Gulch is weather dependent. Any forcasted rain in a 50 mile radius may make it impossible to enter Buckskin Gulch. There will be alternative hikes in the area if this happens.

We will also spend a couple of days camping and exploring the area in addition to the 4 days in the canyons.

Estimate Cost of $800-1000 includes airfare, car rental, permits, and staying 1 night in a bed.

Trip Description

Join us on Thursday, June 15 - Sunday, June 18, as we explore part of the Chippewa National Forest, hike The Lost Forty, take a boat ride to Star Island & hike to Lake Windigo and camp on the shores of Cass Lake. Let me know if you have questions.

Fun Fact! The Chippewa National Forest is the first National Forest established east of the Mississippi River & contains more lakes & wetlands than any other National Forest!

We will leave the Twin Cities on Thursday, June 15, around 10 AM. We will stop & hike at the Shingobee Recreation Area, just south of Walker, MN. The North Country National Scenic Trail winds through part of Shingobee Recreation Area. We will continue on to Cass Lake & set up camp late afternoon / early evening on Thursday. On Friday, we will take a pontoon boat to Star Island, the largest Island on Cass Lake. Star island is unique because it is also home to Lake Windigo, a one-of-a kind lake within a lake.

Saturday will be a day of exploring bogs, scenic byways, historic sites & The Lost Forty—an area of land that was never logged. The Lost Forty Scientific & Natural Area (SNA) has virgin old growth Red & White pines that are 350 years old. It’s also home of the MN Red Pine “Big Tree Champion”, which stands 120 feet tall & has a circumference of 115 inches.

Sunday will be a day of exploring the area before returning home.

For those who would like to bike, there are three bike trails in the area: Migizi Bike Trail is a 19 mile paved bike trail that circles Pike Bay; The section of the Heartland State Trail from Cass Lake to Walker is a 22-mile paved trail; Section 3 of the Paul Bunyan State Trail covers 37 miles from Walker to Bemidji.

Meals will be on your own. We will provide a stove for group use. We will have a group potluck dinner on Friday. Sharing large tents will be necessary to accommodate the camping site. Possible dinner options in Cass Lake or Bemidji on Thursday and Saturday.

Estimated Cost: $20 - 40, depending on group size. (plus meals & transportation) Deposit: $15

Help eradicate invasive parsnip in one of our state parks by participating in the 5th Annual Parsnip Pull at Whitewater State Park, 8 a.m. to Noon, Saturday, June 24. Lunch from Subway Sandwiches will be provided. Volunteers will work in teams to pull wild parsnip from heavy use areas of the park.

We will arrange carpooling closer to the event and will need an early start as the park is around 2 hours from the metro area.

Trip Description

Want to try backpacking for the first time? Maybe you’ve been out once and want to solidify your skills? Then this trip is for you!

We’ll plan this trip together from selecting the route and campsites to figuring out meals and logistics. In the process, you’ll learn how to plan a trip; choose the right gear, clothing and food; pack a backpack, navigate and camp in the backcountry; filter water, hang a bear bag, and cook with a backpacking stove; and train to get in shape for the challenge.

Don’t have the gear? We can probably get what you need from the gear locker!

This trip is open to 5 Rovers who have been on 0 or 1 backpacking trips. If there are still spots available Aug. 1st, the trip will open up to Rovers with more backpacking experience.

Note: “Beginner” here is in terms of backcountry hiking/camping skills and abilities. The Superior Hiking Trail is rugged and more difficult than most state park trails in Minnesota. You should be able to handle 8-10 miles with a 30-lb. pack on state park trails that at least come close to replicating the SHT (e.g., Afton, Banning, Jay Cooke, most parks along the north shore, or Interstate Park, WI.)

The weekend will include driving up to the north shore in the morning and hiking in the afternoon on Friday, 2 full days of hiking Saturday & Sunday, and a morning hike and drive home in the afternoon Monday. We will start early each day so we have the best chance of getting spots in the better campsites on what may be a busy weekend. I estimate we will cover more than 24 but fewer than 30 miles on this trip.

We will have a ~3 hour pre-trip get together in July to plan our route, logistics and sort out what gear to bring; and a training hike with full backpack in August. Be sure to read our policies on communication and participation so you know what’s expected of you.

Once accepted, a deposit of $10 payable to the coordinator will hold your space. Estimated costs include SHT shuttle and/or state park campsite (if needed.) Add to that your food, gas, etc. You must be a member to sign up, and your membership must be current at the time of the trip.

Contact Mike O. for more information, to sign up, and to get access to Google docs for more information (carpooling, tent sharing, etc.)

Trip Description

Join us as we gently paddle down the beautiful St Croix river, and find our way back to the start point by bike! This will be a relaxed intro to kayak-biking trips, 9 miles each way or 18 miles round trip. We will meet at 10:00am at Wild River State Park at the boat ramp parking lot (River Trail trailhead) and lock our bikes. By 10:30am we will be at the Sunrise Landing in the north end of the state park, where we will park the cars and unload the kayaks and canoes. Then the fun begins! Paddling (~3hrs) downstream to the bikes, and then returning to the cars by bike (~1 hr) on paved/gravel roads! Total trip time expected >6 hrs (leaving time for photos, lunches, swims, exploring, as well as dropping off/picking up bikes and kayaks.)

This is a beginner-intermediate trip. You do not need to be a Rover member to attend day trips, but you must sign the waiver form available on the Rovers website. Participants need to organize their own bikes, bike helmets, locks, kayaks, paddles and life jackets. Participants are responsible for transport of their own kayaks and bikes. There are 3 Rovers kayaks available for members (contact Andrea - first to claim them gets em). Otherwise, kayaks will be available for rent at the State Park via a third party vendor, details will be available on the State Park website from Memorial Day. All vehicles entering a State Park need to pay the entrance fee if you don’t already have a State Park sticker.

Stuff to remember: dry bag for keys and phone, packed lunch and snacks, water to drink, sunscreen and hat, bike and helmet and bike lock, kayak/paddles/life vest, state park pass, a smile and a sense of adventure.

Trip Description

We are looking for 10 Rovers to join Great River Greening to help plant wildflowers and pull invasive garlic mustard at Westwood Hills Nature Center in St. Louis Park on Saturday, June 3, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The address is 8300 W Franklin Ave, St. Louis Park, MN 55426

Once a golf course, this 160-acre site is now a beautiful natural area comprised of rolling hills of big woods forest, tall grass prairie, and wetland habitat surrounding Westwood Lake. More information about the park can be found here:
https://www.stlouispark.org/parks-rec/westwood-hills-nature-center.html

A light breakfast snack and lunch will be provided! Plus all ages are welcome, but children must be supervised.

If you are able to participate, please register yourself individually on the event website (https://www.greatrivergreening.org/events/june-3-westwood-hills-nature-center/) as soon as you can. Your spot will be guaranteed when you register for the event. IMPORTANT: When you fill out the online form, enter “MN Rovers Outdoors Club” in the Group Name box. The organizers can help group us together during the event if you include our group name when you register.

They are also looking for Event Assistants and Volunteer Supervisors. These roles are separate from the general volunteers. Event Assistants will help check-in volunteers or setup lunch and hand out the food to the volunteers. When you register, select the box for Event Assistant (Registration/parking assistant/refreshment/etc/). Volunteer Supervisors help motivate and assist 5-10 general volunteers such as teaching the proper way to plant a native wildflower (a GRG staff will train them), refilling buckets of water, or help assist volunteers to first aid. No experience is necessary for either role.

Great River Greening is a non-profit organization who inspires and leads local communities throughout Minnesota in restoring the land and water that enrich our lives. As Minnesota’s leader in community-based restoration, devoted solely to stewardship, we engage volunteers on a scale no other environmental organization can match. We have worked alongside with nearly 40,000 volunteers removing invasive species and plant native trees, flowers, and grasses, at more than 300 sites throughout the state for over 20 years.

Trip Description

The plan is to camp Friday night at Indian lake Campground. There should be an early start Sat morning from Indian Lake. Proceed down Cloquet River,a section designated as primitive/remote and describe by the DNR as wonderfully wild. The trip entails 35 miles, some class I & II rapids so intermediate paddling skills are desired. Most rapids have portages. Average travel-2 days. People are responsible for bringin their own food and carrying their own water or beverages of choice. With the possible exception of a shared evening meal. Water is available at the campground, but I will bring a filter for backup. A shuttle will be arranged. Each must arrange their own transportation and equipment. Costs would include gas and meals on the way up and back, plus campground fees. Driving to Indican Lake is about equal to driving to Two Harbors from the TC. Any overage on the deposit will be refunded; total cost TBD.

The 40 mile option includes one scheduled rest stop and the 100 mile includes three rest stops. I plan to register for the 40 mile option; regardless of the distance you choose we’ll plan to meet up following our ride to enjoy the festivities at Fulton Brewery. NOTE: people tackling the 100 mile ride may start as early as 9 am, the pre-ride assembly will cater to the 40 mile Rovers with a meet time of 10:30 am but post-ride timing will likely work out well for everyone. All of details may be found on the website listed except our meeting place at 10:30 am prior to the ride. Please RSVP so that I can contact you with a specific meeting location at Fulton Brewery - to be determined this week. The registration fee is about $55 (registration deadline is May 5 at midnight), and there will be food and beverages available for purchase following the ride, you’ll definitely want to bring a change of clothes, some cash and your ID. Again, there are many details on the website - each time I open the page, I find a new detail - so make sure you sift though the site so you have a gist of the ride. Trip Description

Want to try backpacking for the first time?
You’ve been out once and want to solidify your skills?
Want to coordinate a beginner backpacking trip yourself and want to co-coordinate with someone first?
This is the trip for you!

We’ll plan this trip together from selecting the route to figuring out meals. Along the way we’ll learn how to choose the right gear, pack a pack, cook with a backpacking stove, filter water, hang a bear bag, and train to get into shape for the physical challenges.

Don’t have backpacking gear? We’ll get what you need from the gear locker.

This trip is open to:
4-5 Rovers who have been on 0 or 1 backpacking trips
Up to 1 Rover who has experience and plans to coordinate their own beginner trip this year or next.

Note: “Beginner” is in terms of backcountry camping skills. The SHT is a rugged trail that is more difficult than most state park trails in Minnesota. We won’t be knocking off 14-mile days, but you should be able to handle 8 miles with a 30 lb pack in a state park OR commit to getting into shape to do that prior to the trip. That way you will be ready for the terrain we will encounter on the SHT.

We will have an approximately 3 hour pre-trip get together in May to plan our route and gear.

Trip Description

We’ll split into two groups on Friday and do recon hikes from the Loon Lake Lodge through to the Magnetic Rock trailhead. On Saturday and Sunday we’ll do a maintenance sweep on the Brice Breon, and whatever other sections that are in need of work. If time permits we’ll also start the process of getting approval to move portions of the BRT off of the west end double track ski trail by doing preliminary scouting for a bypass of the Cut-a-Cross trail between the Cross River Bridge and the Port Arthur Duluth & Western RR grade as well as the section of the BRT eastward from the Gunflint high cliffs overlook downhill to where the BRT skirts the bog crossed by the West End double track ski trail.
It’s fun, it’s great exercise, it makes you feel good, and the scenics and camaraderie are unbeatable More details available on the Friends of the Border Route Trail MU site at https://www.meetup.com/Friends-of-the-Border-Route-Trail/events/239094186/

Trip Description

The Sadistic Century is a fun and challenging cycling event in the Chippewa River Valley in southwest Wisconsin, near Menomonie (about 1 hour, 15 minutes from the Twin Cities).

We’ve registered for the 100k route (62 miles), other options are 60k (37 miles) or 161k (100 miles). Join us or choose another route that suits you. Event registration is only $50 until June 15.

We will camp nearby, probably at Highland Ridge, near Spring Valley. We camped there last year and it was a really nice campground. There’s a brewery in Menomonie with great pizza we can go to if we have time.

The ride is on Saturday, on Sunday we’ll probably go for a hike or an easy-going bike ride before heading home.

Weekend of mountain biking, orienteering, and hiking for all levels through the Chequamegon National Forest Region of NW Wisconsin (Cable/Hayward). The Chequamegon Area Mountain Bike Association (CAMBA) off-road bike trail system consists of over 300 miles of marked and mapped routes through a near-wilderness area of striking beauty and peaceful solitude. This well-mapped trail system includes many routes that use singletrack paths, gravel forest roads, two-track trails, and ski trails. Lodging is a bunk in a rustic cabin or camping on our property.

Friday:
We’ll leave the cities after work on Friday, it’s about a 3-hour drive to our place.

Saturday & Sunday:
Ride at your own pace on your choice of trails — the trails are well mapped and rated according to ability. | trail guide |
and/or
Practice orienteering/land navigation in the forest. We’re doing an adventure race in June and will be practicing our map reading and compass skills to prepare for the race. This will involve some hiking off trail (bushwhacking). If you’re not comfortable or interested in that, there’s plenty of ski/snowshoe trails you can hike on instead (or do more mountain biking).

Accommodations: Camping or a bunk in a rustic cabin (we ask for $20 to help with expenses). No running water; to clean up after a long day of biking, we either pay for a shower at a hotel, swim in a lake, or use a portable outdoor shower.

Food: Bring your own breakfast, lunch, and snacks. We may head to a local eatery for dinner on Saturday or we may decide to grab some groceries and have a BBQ.

Estimated cost: $20 + food/gas. Deposit: $20. Max trip size: 8-12 people willing to carpool.

Helmets are required and non-Rover members need to sign a waiver. If rain is forecast or the trail is muddy we will cancel it a few days before.

Directions: Meet at the state park parking lot under the 77 bridge on the southeast side of the Minnesota River. From the cities take 77 south and take the second exit to Highway 13 north. Trip Description

Only 2% of the original forest remains in Minnesota. Our club has adopted a portion of remnant oak forest in Elm Creek Park Reserve, which is part of the Three Rivers Park District.

You can help ensure the health of our woodlot by helping pull and stack buckthorn, an invasive species which hinders growth of native plants, on Saturday, May 6, from 9 am. to 12:30 p.m. This is also a chance to see the progress we’ve made so far and give our little slice of forest a fighting chance.

Bring water, work gloves, snack/lunch, and some clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. We’ll have some gloves on hand for those who forget.

We will meet at 9 a.m. at Highpointe Park in Champlin — 10200 Goose Lake Parkway, Champlin, MN 55316 — and walk in to the woodlot from there. Phone reception is unreliable at the woodlot. If you are running late, be sure to call. If you know your way in, feel free to come any time.

After our work is done, we will go to nearby Anoka for socializing at a pizza shop or brew pub.

Non-members can participate in this activity and are welcome!

If you’d like to learn more about buckthorn and why it’s such a problem, you can read about it on the MN DNR’s website (http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/invasives/terrestrialplants/woody/buckthorn/index.html).

Trip Description

Casual birding walk on and around the bridge. May see waterfowl, early migrating warblers, Sandhill Cranes, Bald Eagle, woodpeckers, etc. Walk will last about 60 to 90 minutes with a possible post walk event to view sky dancing by woodcocks at a second location.

No experience is required, but experienced birders are welcome and encouraged to come and help. We will locate and identify birds, as well as talk about them. No signup is required, just show up. Membership in Rovers is not required, and beginning birders (or those curious to find out what it is about and who does this type of thing) are welcome.

Try not to wear whites or brightly-colored clothing; wear clothing to fit the weather, including boots for potentially muddy trails—pet dogs cannot be included on the walk. Bring binoculars if you have them, a smile, and a friendly attitude. Email or call if you have questions (mikesw07@yahoo.com 952-997-2986, 651-283-4477).

Meet at the parking lot at the north end of Old Cedar Road Bridge in Bloomington. This area is also referred to as the Historic Cedar Avenue Minnesota River Crossing and also the Long Meadow Bridge. It can be located by taking E. Old Shakopee Road (24th Ave) in Bloomington either going south from the Mall of America or exiting Cedar Avenue (Highway 77) and head southwest (you may think you are going west) to the first stoplight at Old Cedar Ave S.—turn left toward the River. The Bridge and parking lot is about 0.5 mile down the road. We will meet at the parking lot.
